Responsible Camping
Here at Lakes Escape HQ our top priorities are ensuring the Health and Safety of our Guests ( and of course ensuring they have the BEST time ) & promote responsible camping. As our vans take to the roads in a couple of weeks time along with hundreds of others we want to take the time to remind all our road trippers that we all have a collective responsibility to respect each other and the environment.
In our view hiring a Camper is the ultimate dream but please make sure that your dream does not become someone else’s nightmare! Here are our top tips for responsible camping and always remember to LEAVE NO TRACE
- Use campsites whenever available – This is the best way to minimise your impact on the environment. Research ‘Brit Stops’ where pubs and restaurants allow you to stop in return for eating and drinking in their premises ( a win win in our eyes ) If you find yourself unable to find a pitch in a site then stay low profile by avoiding Residential Areas, Honey Pot areas and near other vans.
- Be Self Contained – By this we mean don’t spread outside your camper if not booked on a site. No Awnings, washing lines..keep inside your van nice and cosy.
- Consider your waste – Never Ever dump you waste! It is bad for the environment. If you are booked on a site then there will be shared facilities. We suggest you hire one of our Portable Loos which are compact enough to use in the Van. We have made them as cheap as possible to hire at only £10 for the duration of your hire. This is a minimal charge to cover the cost of the cleaning products and my time to make sure it is squeaky clean for the next users. Alternatively use public loos.
- Leave No Trace – Says it all really!!! There is nothing more disturbing than seeing litter, tents, fires.. left behind from any form of Camping. Locals are very welcoming to visitors but will not tolerate visitors who do not respect the environment and leave a stain on the Landscape. It is also a nice idea to do a litter pick in the area.
- No Campfires or BBQ’s – We know camping isn’t the same without sitting around a fire and we don’t want to spoil all your fun but they can be highly destructive so please only stoke up the barbie and light a fire in campsites that allow.
- Do not Ignore Signs – More and more ‘No overnight parking’ signs are being displayed across the Lakes. If found to be ignoring these signs be prepared to move on. If you are unable to drive or move your camper then it may be towed away with all charges strictly the responsibility of the hirer.
- Dog Poo – We are not sure why dog owners think it is ok to hang poo bags on trees like weird Christmas Decorations. It always baffles us why people think leaving dog poo and not taking it home or disposing it correctly is so difficult. We love this Illustration by Wonderful Wild Woman and local lass Gilly McArthur. I do believe in the tooth fairy though 🙂
